Introduction
to Interaction Design
Interaction Design is about creating user experiences that enhance and augment the way people work, communicate, interact and the main aim is to reduce the negative aspects such as frustration, enhance the positive aspects such as enjoyment and develop interactive products that are easy, effective and pleasurable to use. Interaction Design is increasingly been accepted as the umbrella term covering various design aspects such as user interface design, software design, user-centered design and many more. Other than being the umbrella for various design aspects, Interaction Design is also fundamental to all disciplines, fields and approaches that are concerned with researching and designing computer-based systems for people as it is shown in the figure below (Rogers et al., 2015).

Interaction designers need to have a set of skills such as
understanding marketing, business, technology and many more because of the
nature of Interaction Design contribution to so many fields. And that is why
Interaction Design is usually carried out by a multidisciplinary team to cover
the skills needed for a certain project. The benefits of creating such teams
are (Rogers et al., 2015):
·
More ideas generated
·
New methods developed
·
More creative and original design produced
Other than benefits, disadvantages also exist:
·
Difficult to communicate and progress forward
the designs created
·
Same thing may have different meaning to others
leading to confusion and misunderstandings
Furthermore,
Interaction Design has a certain process which includes 4 basic activities:
These activities are repeated until a final product is
produced that will satisfy the user needs and fulfill the aim of Interaction
Design (Rogers et al., 2015).
This blog was created for the purpose of sharing various
information about Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design (ID).

Hello Christos, could you please give me an example of ideas that can be generated?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question Valeri. In a multidisciplinary team the member have different personalities and set of skill and this creates idea with different perspectives . One example is when trying to create the design of a fridge, one person could suggest that there should be a horizontal bar to pull, another person could suggest that it needs a vertical bar and another person could suggest of handles on the side of the fridge.
DeleteHello Christo, can you please tell me why the Prototype is important for the 4 basic activities?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question Demetra. Prototyping is important because is a way of giving the user an idea of how the product will be and testing to see if the product is ready to be finished.
DeleteGreedings Christo! As Computer Scientists are the backbone of HCI, should they enhance their communication skills in order to collaborate with the other scientists involved in HCI? If yes how is this possible?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question Alexi. Yes it is important enhance communication skills because nowadays any job in business require a form of communication and interaction with other employees. One way of improving communication skills, for future computer scientists that are still in school, is to take an introductory course on communication such as: sociology, public speaking, written communication and management skills.
DeleteHello Christos, could you please explain why is considered difficult, in teams, to communicate and progress forward?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your question Christopher. People in a multidisciplinary team have different backgrounds; thus different perspectives and ways of seeing and talking about the world. Meaning that the team members may have different ways of talking about design and may use the same terms to mean different things.
