Interface Metaphors
A conceptual model is a representation of a system to enhance the understanding of the system. In the design process, conceptual models are beneficial because they can provide guidance to implementation and documentation. Another benefit is that it can help system designers to think of the best way of a system to organize information. (Health Information Technology Foundations, n.d.)
Interface metaphors are used for interactive product so that a user can better understand what it is and how it works. One example of interface metaphor is the files and folders of an operating system that anyone has on their desktop. (Rogers et al, 2015)
Few benefits of interface metaphors:
⦁ Users have an easier time learning new systems
⦁ The product becomes accessible to a greater number of users
Few disadvantages of interface metaphors:
⦁ Conflicts with design principles
⦁ Limits the user to understand a system through the metaphor
⦁ Reduces the capabilities of a designer in coming up with new conceptual models (Rogers et al, 2015)
